I know that the system restore points take up a lot of space, and I don't want to backup the restore points. I know the general recommendation is to delete all but the most recent restore point before making a backup, but I have thought of another technique that may allow me to avoid backing up the restore points

Hi, My XP Home Edition "System Restore" has stopped working, I select date to be restored to, the wizard does it's stuff, pc shuts down/restarts, then tells me that restore failed. I have gone through the System Restore reinstallation process several times. I don't know if I have successfully reinstalled System Restore since the Run window automatically closed after asking me for locations of the sr.sys and srframe.mmf files and there was no message showing I have reinstalled it.

Is Sytem Restore actually running? Check System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and make certain that "Disable System Restore" is unchecked. If System Restore is running then what you are seeing is possibly what I call the "wininit" problem. First, check that you don't have a wininit.ini file.
