Yes, it does. I did one in Safe Mode after installing a bad driver and it worked perfectly. I find the placement of the option to create a restore point a little odd (in the System applet instead of Backup & Restore), but it worked just fine.

I guess it depends on your build. Because I'm a beta tester, I'm on 5365 now. There is even a nice feature in the System Configuration Utility (msconfig) called "Tools" that let's you run various proggies like rstrui.exe from it directly. Maybe this was in earlier builds but I found them so annoying I didn't keep them on long enough to notice.
You've also apparently been having some problems with your Vista install based on other posts you've made. If you are already on the latest build, maybe you should do another clean install. It *is* beta and beta means lots of wipes/installs.

Yes even the box was a horrid design! Just like vista..you CAN judge an OS by its cover :-)
Nice looks, sure it looked great, but to open it, its like a rubrics cube puzzle...! LOL
Just like Vista, usability is ZERO!
I have had many people call me just to ask how to open the darn thing!
One guy broke it out of frustration to get the disk out!
He BROKE it?
Couldn't figure out a simple box . . . amazing . . . it took me all of a few seconds to see the HINGE on the bottom right of the box, and the FINGER GRIPS near the rounded corner on the top right . . . "gee, let's see what happens when I pull . . . AH!" Box open.
But then again, I figured out the Rubik's Cube when I was 9 and can still solve it in under a minute and a half (slow compared to many) so I guess I had an advantage . . .
Oh, and before I get labeled an "MS FAN BOY", I've been running Linux (and Unix before Linux) on computers long before many people that purport to be "Linux Gurus" even heard of Linux . . . and prefer Linux . . . I have to run Vista (and other versions of Windows) because I'm a tech and need to actually use the products I have to support.
Mic
Ah, but did you ever write printer drivers in Z80 assembler, or extensions for Commodore 64 ROM Basic in assembler.
Darned kids :)
Yeah, "Kid" . . .
Yes, I had a Vic 20 and a "Commie" 64 many moons ago. Also an Atari 800 (that Atari Assembler was a bitch) because I wanted to design video games.
Didn't pan out, I lost interest in programming and found other things that interested me more at the time, but I never was without a computer of some type for the past 25+ years.
Mic
Hmm, the Atari was 68000 wasn't it? I tried to learn C with the Amiga but never could figure out where I was going with that, so went back to assembler but I guess when Tramiel messed up Commodore and the Amiga went belly up was around the same time I started doing "Business" stuff and wound up doing Database stuff only. Boring but paid the bills for a while.
I'm going WAY back, before Tremiel left Commodore and bought Atari. The Atari 400 and 800 were the original Atari home computers. The 400 had a horrible 'membrane' keyboard that was CTS waiting to happen, the 800 had a real keyboard, two cartridge slots. A few "joystick" ports (actually, com-ports), a serial bus that was suspiciously similar to the modern-day Universal Serial Bus and a whopping 48K of user available memory. When the Atari 800 was introduced they didn't include memory used by the "OS" in the reported RAM. It was actually 64K with Atari Basic taking up the rest when you started the thing with no cart(s) inserted.

Actually RobDee, my hardware is getting to 20 months old (from the date it was purchased). The actuall design age of some components may be even older than that.
I include the spec in my sig to prove a point. Vista DOES run without problems on older hardware.

Using the MS ActiveX log utility, I can see it fails with an error: "Code Download Error: (hr = 80004005) Unspecified error".
If I manually copy this ActiveX to the target system and run regsvr32 on the cab file, it gives me an error telling me the control "may not be compatible with the version of Windows that you're running." If I extract the unsigned OCX (the cab is signed; OCX is not) and run regsvr32.exe on this OCX, it installs and runs fine.
This cab is distributed by a vendor and works on all other platforms. Oddly enough, it only fails on SOME Vista systems.
I tried all the usual Vista tricks (added to secure zone, lowered security in secure zone, changed Advanced IE settings related to certificates, tried the ActiveX installer service, and disabled User Account Control).
Anyone have any pointers?

Yes. Download them before you start and put them on a usb key or a cd or similar so you have them to hand. Check to see if any of the drivers are for your hard disk controller as they may need special treatment if they need to be installed while vista is installing. The readme from dell is a good place to start.

You might get a faster answer if you tell us which label maker program.
I wouldn't have expected SP1 to resolve any of them.
(1) is an issue with Happauge. That card isn't supported in Vista by them. If the manufacturer doesn't, don't expect Microsoft to.
(2) is a file association issue, try running a repair of your MS Office product.
(3) Could be corrupt dx files, or a video driver issue. Again, this isn't what the SP is about. Run sfc scannow from an elevated command prompt and install the most recent distribution of your video card drivers that are certified for Vista.
If any of these appeared after installing SP1 beta, file a bug report on connect and then remove the beta if you do not want to deal with the issues.

Thanks to you all for your help. I didn't get a chance to try restoring through safe mode, although at least I know how to do it should I need to. My PC was under warranty, so I'd been talking to their tech support (this forum was much more useful!), and when they couldn't diagnose or fix it over the phone they sent a nice man out. It was a corruption of Vista that was the problem so he ran an F10 recovery. Possibly a severe remedy, and it's taken me the best part of all day to reload my other software and files, but it's working better than before (possibly as it's a clean install, not full of manufacturer's helpful extra software...). Thanks again for everything. Bernie

system restore keeps losing it's restore points from day to day.
If you are dual-booting with Xp, this is going to happen. It has something to do with "volsnap.sys." Colin can eplain it much better than I.
To work around this, do one of two things:
1. Enable BitLocker in Vista. (Courtesy of MICHAEL) This way, XP can't read the disc and therefore can't delete the SR points. 2. Use a third-party boot manager such as BootMagic and hide the O/S's from each other (my preferred way.
Or, I guess, 3. just live with it...
This has been discussed on the forum if you wish to do some more research. Just search the forum for volsnap.sys and you will ind it.

It will if you are frequently booting into XP as well as Vista. There is an incompatibility between the Volume Shadowcopy Services of the two systems such that VSS in XP thinks the system restore points in Vista are corrupt. It deletes them thinking to protect the user. It will not be fixed. The problem is not with System Restore, but with the VSS driver used by System Restore to take the snapshots SR uses to create the restore points. Disabling the XP SR will make no difference.

Not only will this happen when "booting" into XP from Vista but I often simply shortcut from one desktop to the other on a dual boot by typing C:\Documents and Settings\Kue2's XP Profile" in run or in a combo address bar run box in the taskbar (rt. click taskbar>toolbars>address>unlocked taskbar>drag seam to left. It does this even if you access the XP desktop via a shortcut. It's one of many things they can't or won't fix.
After looking at the VSS pitch and hype from SR PM Eduardo Laureano "oh gee golly it's way cooler" in typical Redmonese cheerleader mode like the Product Guide (deeper, more systemic ect.), I find System Restore no better--but worse in Vista than in XP. So are many others. The big hype was it's more powerful and it can be run via Win RE outside of Windows, in no boot situations and in XP it can be run from 3 different flavors of safe mode, from anecdotal reports, it isn't working much and many people are finding that SR in Vista is *failing to make points at the default times it is supposed to* putting the dual boot failure aside.
Microsoft Vista team writers also have have yet to post any substantive information on System Restore or Win RE on Technet or MSDN or any other MSFT site 6 weeks after Beta 2 public release. The public and Beta testers are equally in the dark on both.

Chad;
I admire your diligence and your ability to gather and produce pertinent, additional information. I have certainly increased my understanding of many facets of Vista simply by clicking on some of the links you have provided.
Try one little step: enable Bitlocker in Vista, manually set a restore point and then switch between O/S's with your various methods. Then see if the points stay.
I am dual-booting on a system where I have used a boot manager to hide each O/S partition from the other and am not having any of these restore point issues.
